What is meant by different types of card transactions?

Card transactions are categorized based on the following characteristics:

  • Brand: For example, Mastercard or VISA.
  • Processing Type: For example, Debit or Credit.
With debit cards, money is directly and immediately deducted from the cardholder’s account for each transaction.
With credit cards, the cardholder can make a transaction without immediate payment. The money is deducted from the cardholder’s account later. Credit card fees are usually higher than debit card fees.
  • Type: For example, consumer or business card.
Consumer cards are typically for personal use, while business cards are often used for commercial purposes. Business cards generally incur higher fees than consumer cards.
  • Geography: The country of the card issuer in relation to the country where the transaction takes place plays a role.
    Some examples include:
  1. Domestic (the card issuer and the transaction are in the same country).
  2. Europe Intra-EEA (the card issuer and the transaction are both within the European Economic Area).
  3. Europe non-EEA (the card issuer is within the European Economic Area, and the transaction occurs in a European country outside this area).
  4. Inter-Regional EEA (the card issuer is within the European Economic Area, and the transaction takes place outside this area, or vice versa. In this case, interchange fees may apply).

Will all fees increase after implementing card recognition?

No. A distinction is made between different types of card transactions. A large portion of card transactions will become cheaper, such as most debit card transactions. Another portion of card transactions will become more expensive, such as transactions with business cards and transactions involving an interchange fee (agreed compensation costs that occur within credit card networks, such as Mastercard and VISA, between the cardholder's bank and the seller's bank for processing the payment)

Are these more expensive types of card transactions something new?

No. Credit card companies have been applying different fees for different types of cards for years. CCV has been correctly passing on these fees for terminal transactions for a long time.
Since October 2024, this has been introduced for e-commerce transactions. Until that date, CCV had covered the additional costs related to its customers' card transactions itself, as the configuration for card recognition still had to be administratively implemented.

How can I see what types of card transactions were made?

The different types of card transactions will be listed on the invoices that the customer receives from CCV. Once a card transaction has occurred during the invoiced period, it will appear on the corresponding invoice.
